Owning a Barista Express: What New Owners Get Wrong (and How to Get It Right)
7 Mistakes New Owners Make
1. Grinding too fine (or too coarse) and not adjusting
Dial-in is iterative. If your shot runs too fast (under 20 seconds), grind finer. Too slow (over 35 seconds), grind coarser. Most new owners give up after one try instead of adjusting.
2. Letting stale grounds sit in the grind chamber
The grind chamber retains some grounds between uses. Run a quick purge grind (into the bin, not your cup) if the machine has sat for more than a day.
3. Skipping the dosing funnel
The included dosing funnel keeps grounds from spilling over the portafilter rim during the grind-to-tamp transition. Skipping it means a messier counter and an inconsistent dose.
4. Tamping unevenly
An uneven tamp channels water unevenly through the puck, producing a sour or thin shot. Press straight down, level, with consistent pressure every time.
5. Ignoring the water tank until it’s empty
Running the pump dry can introduce air into the system. Top up the tank before it’s fully empty, not after the machine starts sputtering.
6. Using tap water with high mineral content
Hard water accelerates scale buildup inside the boiler. Filtered water (the included water filter helps) extends the time between descaling cycles.
7. Delaying descaling
Scale buildup affects heating efficiency and shot quality over time, and can eventually require a repair. Descale on a schedule, not just when something seems off. See the walkthrough below.
3 Starter Recipes
The honest first shot
Start at the factory-set grind. Dose, tamp, pull. Taste it. Adjust one variable (grind size) at a time from there. Don’t change dose and grind together, or you won’t know what fixed it.
A simple flat white
Pull a single shot into a wider cup. Steam milk to a tight, glossy microfoam (not big dry bubbles). Pour slowly from height, then close in low for a flat, even finish.
Iced espresso, done right
Pull a slightly stronger shot (fine the grind a touch) directly over ice. The extra concentration compensates for dilution as the ice melts.
Descaling & Maintenance Walkthrough
- Empty the water tank and remove the water filter (if installed).
- Mix Breville's descaling solution per the package instructions. Don't substitute a generic descaler, since it can affect warranty coverage.
- Run the machine’s built-in descale cycle (check your model’s manual for the exact button sequence).
- Flush with at least two full tanks of clean water afterward to clear any residue.
- Reinstall the water filter and resume normal use.
Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe down the steam wand and drip tray after each session. That's general care advice, not a monetized recommendation.
